Game Changers: JioPhone2 and Jio GigaFiber

Reliance Industries Limited conducted its 41st annual general meeting today at Birla Matushri Sabhagar in Mumbai. Apart from the achievement of many significant milestones in data growth, voice usage and video consumption, the meeting witnessed the launch of an advanced feature phone: JioPhone2 and fiber-based broadband service – Jio GigaFiber.

Mukesh Ambani’s daughter, Isha Ambani introduced a high-end model of JioPhone, ‘JioPhone2’. Addressing the requests of the masses, JioPhone2 consists of a 2.40-inch horizontal display and a full QWERTY keyboard with a four-way navigation pad; much like a spiritual successor to or carrying the essence of Blackberry phones. To quench the thirst of the tech-savvy, the phone offers a 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage which is expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card, which is not a detachment from the memory specs of the original JioPhone. The resolution remains the same at 240 x 320 pixels. Photography enthusiasts do not have much to look forward to with a measly 2-megapixel rear and 0.3-megapixel front cameras.

The phone will run on the same KAI OS as was sported its predecessor. JioPhone2 supports dual-SIM, LTE, VoLTE, VoWifi and all 4G capabilities. The connectivity sphere is also looking promising as the phone comes with WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, NHF and FM. JioPhone2 will also be bringing YouTube, WhatsApp and Facebook without any compatibility issues as the apps were built specifically for the phone. Battery capacity also looks good at 2000mAh which is adequate for a non-touch screen feature phone like JioPhone2. Reliance provides customers with a great deal at only Rs. 2999 from August 15, 2018. JioPhone Monsoon Hungama from July 21 will allow existing JioPhone users to exchange for JioPhone2 at the low price of Rs. 501.

The launch of JioGigaFiber was also announced for 1100 cities simultaneously, which will allow households to access ultra high- definition entertainment on large screen TVs, multi-party video conferencing from the living room, voice-acted virtual assistants, virtual reality gaming and digital shopping. The fixed-line broadband service got no price announcement but it can be speculated that it will rock the market just like the Jio internet prices did.
